WHO ARE NYC?

Newport Youth Council comprises youth aged between 11 and 25 years who are nominated to represent the young people in Newport. Members come from all over Newport and represent a range of organisations, youth clubs and schools across the city.

NYC provides an opportunity for young people to express their views, make changes in their community and take responsibility for decisions that affect their lives. .Some of those that are most involved are shown below.

"I am in Year 9 at High School. I like to get involved in the extra curriculum activities, e.g. the choir. I have also been formally invited to join the school debating team. I like to get involved with youth and community issues and help others to solve problems."

"I am a good orator and believe communication is a key to achieving objectives. I believe I have a responsibility as a citizen of Newport to use my skills to benefit youth, and that I can do this through the Youth Council."

HOW DOES NYC WORK?

The management committee members meet once a month to deal with issues important to young people such as education, housing, health leisure, crime/safety and youth facilities. NYC has links to the decision makers who can make changes such as City Borough councillors, local authority staff, the police and the Local Health Board etc.

You can join NYC in two different ways:

Join the NYC as a member which means you will receive information from NYC on what's happening and be asked for your views on issues.

Nominate yourself or a representative from your forum on to the management committee and represent the views young people in Newport.
