WHAT IS NYC?
NYC is made up of young people aged 11-25 years who are nominated to represent the young people in Newport. It is an opportunity for young people to express their views, make changes in their community and take responsibility for decisions that affect their lives.

HOW DOES NYC WORK?
The management committee members meet once a month to deal with issues important to young people such as education, housing, health leisure, crime/safety and youth facilities. NYC has links to the decision makers who can make changes such as City Borough councillors, local authority staff, the police and the Local Health Board etc.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
"The
Youth Council should represent all young people's views, regardless of
race, religion, social class and political affiliation."
- ASK — the young people in your community about how they feel on issues that affect them
- REPRESENT — bring ideas and views of your colleagues/group to the meetings
- FEEDBACK — keep your colleagues informed
WHY SHOULD DECISION MAKERS LISTEN TO US?
"Every young person in Wales has a basic entitlement to: The right
to be consulted, to participate in decision-making and to be heard on
all matters that concern them, or have an impact on their lives"
(Welsh
Assembly Government 'Extending Entitlement' 2002)
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUNG PEOPLE THINK?
Before Newport Youth Council was set up we undertook a consultation with young people across Newport to guage their views and ideas for a youth council. The consultation took the form of a booklet with a range of questions and options for people to comment on. You can download the results of that consultation here.
The download is in Adobe PDF format (242.94 KB) and requires Acrobat
Reader. If you do not have this on your computer you can download a free copy here >>
